France seeks extradition of Noriega

MIAMI, July 17 (UPI) -- French officials said Tuesday they are seeking the extradition of former Panamanian dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega.

France reportedly wants Noriega to serve prison time there in connection with his conviction in absentia for money-laundering, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Noriega has been imprisoned in a South Florida prison since 1990 on international drug-trafficking and money-laundering charges.

"We have consulted with both France and Panama, and a decision was made to go this route," said State Department spokesman Eugene Santoro.
