Edwards tries to shift race focus

MARKS, Miss., July 17 (UPI) -- U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards is trying to connect his campaign with the legacy of civil rights leaders of the 1960s, it was reported.

On the second day of an eight-state tour of impoverished communities, Edwards Monday invoked the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy to ease poverty, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Edward's tour is to end in Prestonsburg, Ky., where Kennedy ended a tour of Appalachia in 1968.

"A lot of Americans think of people who are struggling as people who don't want to work, and that's nonsense. We need to make sure the country understands that," Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina said Monday in Canton, Miss.

Edwards' advisers said they hope the tour will help voters focus more on his commitment to help poor people and focus less on his lifestyle as a multimillionaire, the Post said.
