Olmert mulls Jordan troops in West Bank

JERUSALEM, July 12 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is considering permitting a Palestinian division of the Jordanian army into the West Bank.

Olmert is expected to discuss the possibility during a meeting Monday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Ynetnews reported Thursday.

Abbas requested that the Palestinian Bader Division of the Jordanian army be allowed to enter the West Bank and help him maintain control of the region. He had earlier asked for a similar move in the Gaza Strip before Hamas took control of that area.

Israeli officials would not say whether Olmert plans to grant the request.

Abbas is also expected to ask during Monday's meeting for thousands of protective vests and other military gear to be transferred from Israel to his forces.

Olmert is expected to raise the subject of 250 Fatah prisoners slated for release by Israel and the release of the frozen Palestinian tax funds.
