Pet food company cites clerical error

TORONTO, April 12 (UPI) -- A clerical error led to the delay in the latest recall of contaminated pet food, a spokesman for the Canadian manufacturer said.

"Humans are not perfect. Someone made a mistake," Menu Foods spokesman Sam Bornstein said via e-mail to USA Today. "We were shocked."

On March 16, Menu Foods recalled more than 60 million cans and pouches of 90 brands of dog and cat food made at two plants in the United States. On Tuesday, the company recalled another 12 brands of pet food made in a plant in Canada.

The food has been linked to often-fatal kidney failure in cats and dogs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found a chemical used to make plastic in wheat gluten in the food.

Industry consultants told USA Today they were surprised that Menu Foods didn't know about the shipment of the ingredient to Canada sooner.

"They have the responsibility of controlling all the ingredients going in their products," consultant Sakharam Patil of S.K. Patil & Associates in Munster, Ind., told the newspaper.
