N.J. governor hurt in car crash

TRENTON, N.J., April 12 (UPI) -- New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was taken by Medevac helicopter to a hospital Thursday afternoon after being hurt in a car crash on the Garden State Parkway.

Corzine was traveling in a sport utility vehicle in a two-car motorcade when his driver swerved to avoid a car that was trying to avoid a pickup truck, and went off the road and through a guard rail, a state police spokesman told the Star-Ledger of Newark. The governor suffered a broken femur and head cuts, while an aide and a state trooper were taken to a hospital for examination.

The governor had just left Atlantic City where he addressed the New Jersey Conference of Mayors, and was on his way to the governor's mansion, Drumthwacket, in Princeton for a meeting between the Rutgers women's basketball team and radio shock jock Don Imus.

Senate President Dick Codey told the newspaper he had been notified he would be acting governor while Corzine is in surgery at Cooper Medical Center in Camden.
