German chancellor on Middle East tour

BERLIN, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Germany's chancellor traveled to the Middle East Saturday for a series of meetings on political and security matters.

Angela Merkel was scheduled to visit Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with "political topics" high on the agenda, Merkel spokesman Thomas Steg told Deutsche Welle.

"The chancellor would like the countries in the region to feel responsible and participate in conflict resolution," Steg said.

Deutsche Welle said that while former Chancellor Gerhard Schroder focused on economic issues, Merkel sees issues such as Iran and the Palestinians as important matters. She has already held meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders as well as Jordan's King Abdullah II.
