White House denies any plans for Iran war

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Any idea that President Bush is planning a U.S. invasion of Iran or Syria is a "myth or urban legend," White House spokesman Tony Snow said Friday.

"What the president was talking about is defending American forces within Iraq and also doing what we can to disrupt networks that might be trying to convey weapons or fighters into battle theaters within Iraq to kill Americans and Iraqis," Snow told reporters at the White House briefing.

Language in Bush's speech Wednesday night on changes in strategy in Iraq suggested a more bellicose attitude towards Iraq's neighbors. The United States has also sent a carrier group to the Persian Gulf.

Snow said that Bush still disagrees with proposals to negotiate with Iran and Syria, based on the assumption that both countries want stability in Iraq.
