Bush library may land at SMU

DALLAS, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- First lady Laura Bush's alma mater, Southern Methodist University, has emerged as the front-runner to house the President George W. Bush Presidential Library.

No final decision on the library site has been made but the committee charged with selecting it is focusing on the Dallas campus, committee Chairman Donald Evans said in a statement.

Committee members have told two other finalist sites in Texas -- Baylor University in Waco, near the Bushes' ranch in Crawford, and the University of Dallas in Irving -- that they are out of the running for the library unless terms can't be worked out with Southern Methodist, Texas newspapers reported Friday.

Quoting sources, the Dallas Morning News reported that building a presidential library could cost Southern Methodist more than $200 million. But, the library could also attract 400,000 visitors a year, the newspaper said.
