Egypt jails Anwar Sadat's nephew

CAIRO, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- An Egyptian military court in Cairo has jailed the nephew of the late President Anwar Sadat for blaming his uncle's 1981 assassination on the military.

Talaat el-Sadat received a 1-year sentence and a $35 fine on charges of defaming the armed forces on a satellite television show, spreading false information and suggesting the government never executed Sadat's assassin, Khaled el-Islambolli, and instead conspired to let him go free.

The younger Sadat is an opposition member of Parliament, but the day after his television appearance, the speaker of the house stripped him of his immunity, the New York Times reported from Cairo.

Muhammad Kamal, a member of the upper house of Parliament, told the Times the government had acted within the law.

"If someone claimed that (U.S. President George) Bush was behind Sept. 11, this would be investigated. So what is happening is normal," Kamal said.

Anwar Sadat was gunned down Oct. 6, 1981, at a parade, and the gunman, Khalid Islambouli, was executed in April 1982.
