Mexican candidate links opponent to Chavez

MEXICO CITY, June 28 (UPI) -- Mexican center-right presidential candidate Felipe Calderon is trying to portray his opponent as an ally of leftist Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Calderon's supporters are running ads showing Chavez with images of left-leaning presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Calderon is trying to portray Lopez Obrador as a carbon copy of Chavez, who is considered an irritant by the Bush administration for his alleged attempts to spread his brand of leftist ideals throughout Latin America.

Chavez was an ardent supporter of Bolivian President Evo Morales, who hails from the country's far left, leading up to his election earlier this year.

Mexicans head to the polls for national elections on July 2.
