Hungary, Czech Rep. in flood emergency

BUDAPEST, Hungary, April 4 (UPI) -- Swollen rivers from rain and melting snow prompted Hungary and the Czech Republic to declare states of emergency Tuesday.

Hungary has so far evacuated more than 500 people from their homes and more than 11,500 houses were in danger of being flooded along stretches of the Danube and Ipoly rivers, affecting 32,600 inhabitants, the MTI news agency said. In Budapest, the Danube reached a record 28 feet, flooding adjacent roads and streetcar lines.

The Elbe River was on its way to reaching a record 30-foot mark in Germany by nightfall, and more than 1,000 people along the river were evacuated.

In the Czech Republic, seven of 14 districts declared a state of emergency based on the high levels of the Elbe and other waterways.

In Slovakia, some 1,300 houses in 200 towns and villages across the country were flooded so far, and 474 people were forced to leave their homes, the TASR news agency reported.
