Jerry Falwell hospitalized and critical

LYNCHBURG, Va., March 29 (UPI) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell was in critical condition Tuesday at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Va., suffering from a respiratory aliment.

A statement from Liberty University said Falwell, the school's founder and chancellor, was admitted shortly before midnight Monday suffering from respiratory arrest. H reportedly was placed on a ventilator and quickly stabilized.

"Rev. Falwell is clinically stable, but he is still critically ill," the statement said. "He is undergoing evaluation and his physicians will have a clearer picture Wednesday. His cardiac status is stable and there is no evidence of a heart attack. He is alert and responding to questions."

The 71-year-old Falwell had been admitted to the same hospital Feb. 20 after complaining of shortness of breath. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and remained hospitalized until March 4.

He also founded the controversial Moral Majority political organization in 1979.
