Nobel nomination surprises Georgian leader

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has expressed joy and surprise at news that he has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Saakashvili, the leader of the Georgian Rose Revolution, and Viktor Yushchenko, the recently elected Ukrainian president who led his country's Orange Revolution, were nominated for the prize by U.S. senators John McCain, R-Ariz., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.

In their letter to the Norwegian Nobel Institute, the senators praised the two presidents for their roles in their nations' freedom movements.

Saakashvili told Georgian television companies Thursday, "Of course, this is a great honor, since until now, neither Georgia nor other smaller countries like it have been deemed worthy of such attention," the Interfax news agency reported.

The 37-year-old, U.S.-educated president was attending the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
