Indonesian quake death toll tops 94,000

JAKARTA, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The Indonesian death toll from last week's massive earthquake-tsunami rose to more than 94,000 Monday as rescue workers intensified the evacuation.

"As of this (Monday) morning, a total of 94,081 people listed as

dead," said a Health Minsitry official in Jakarta.

The official said as many as 1,375 others were still listed as missing, while 2,400 people were injured and nearly 272,000 residents left homeless.

Government officials have estimated that the death toll from last

week's massive earthquake and the ensuing gigantic tidal waves could

hit 100,000 from Indonesia alone.

Massive operations were intensified across the devastated province of Aceh to evacuate dies bodies still trapped under debris of collapsed buildings or floating in orvers.

In addition, supplies distribution, including the U.S.-aid workers, for victims also has been intensified, but several survivors were reported to have died from lack of medical treatment.

Health officials have warned of second wanes of deaths across the devaststed province unless thousands of homeless people, who were currently languishing in temporary shelters and camps, get clean water, food and medicines.
