Singapore, Malaysia move to improve ties

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Singapore and Malaysia agreed in meetings Monday to move forward on a range of thorny bilateral issues, stalled since October 2002.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said at a joint press conference after their Monday meeting in Putrajaya that the two sides had identified issues where progress could be made, the Straits Times reported Tuesday.

Abdullah said Malaysia was happy to consider allowing Republic of Singapore Air Force planes to enter Malaysian airspace en route to training areas.

Goh said if that could be done, he would have no hesitation in releasing retirement funds of Malaysians who go home after working in Singapore and want to withdraw their savings before turning 55. Singapore is holding about $595 million in such funds.

Singapore would also be happy to consider joint development of additional pieces of Malayan Railway land, added Goh.

Goh and Abdullah will meet again in two months' time.
