Kiev protesters fatigued but determined

KIEV, Ukraine, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Thousands of protesters who have jammed Kiev's Independence Square since Ukraine's election Nov. 21 are fatigued but determined to remain.

While many have since gone home, the International Herald Tribune said many of those remaining say the revolution that ousted the Communist regime in 1991 was incomplete, and this is the chance to finalize it.

The overwhelming majority are demanding western-backed opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko be sworn in as president.

Borislav Komarsky, 33, a lawyer who lives in Kiev described outgoing President Leonid Kuchma and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich as "yesterday's men."

"We did not have a real revolution in 1991," he said. "We let it slip out of our hands. We will not make the same mistake again."

The November run-off election was first given to Yanukovych, but then declared invalid because of reported vote-rigging.

New laws governing election reform were passed by a huge majority in parliament early Wednesday, and immediately signed into law by outgoing President Leonid Kuchma. The next vote is scheduled for Dec. 26.
