Dems post record fundraising for 2004

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- The Democratic National Committee said Tuesday it had raised over $400 million in the 2004 election cycle, based largely on grassroots fundraising efforts.

"Thanks to our strong grassroots support, the Democratic Party surpassed every fundraising goal by a factor of three," DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe said in a statement. "We were able to compete toe-to-toe with the Republicans at every turn this election cycle."

More than half the money raised -- some $225 million -- came from grassroots donors, including through the Internet, direct mail, telemarketing and canvassing, the party said. In 2000 the party raised $210 million in both federal and non-federal money, but only $40 million came from grassroots donors.

The fundraising totals leave the party debt-free and with millions to spare as it heads into the next election cycles, the DNC said. Money has continued to flow in after the November elections, in which the party lost many major posts. Donors had given $10 million since Election Day, the party said.

"The Democratic Party is strong, prepared and ready for the future," McAuliffe said.
