Pro stem-cell group gets big bucks

SACRAMENTO, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Supporters of a California ballot initiative to give $3 billion for embryonic stem cell research have gotten more than $10.7 million in donations.

By contrast, opponents of Proposition 71 have reported contributions of just $75,000, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Proposition 71 would funnel $3 billion of state money into embryonic stem cell research currently ineligible for federal money.

Many Proposition 71 supporters are wealthy corporate or political figures. Bill Gates gave $400,000 and $100,000 came from Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., who made a fortune as head of Goldman Sachs before his political career. Also, $51,000 was given by Los Angeles billionaire Eli Broad.

EBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife, Pamela, have donated more than $1 million.
