China official cancels visit to Singapore

SINGAPORE, July 13 (UPI) -- A diplomatic row over Taiwan appears to have escalated with China's central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan canceling a planned trip to Singapore.

The central banker was due to give a lecture Wednesday, but cancelled his trip on Monday.

The cancellation comes after Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, visited Taiwan at the weekend for what officials described as a private visit.

However, Lee also met with Taiwanese officials including President Chen Shui-bian, the Taipei Times reported.

China's foreign ministry expressed strong dissatisfaction at Lee's visit, saying Singapore should be prepared to suffer any consequences.

Officials in Singapore say China has given no specific reason for Zhou's cancellation.
