Lithuania's president accused of mob ties

VILNIUS, Lithuania, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A panel investigating alleged ties between Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas and the Russian mob is expected to announce its findings Monday.

The parliamentary committee was supposed to have presented its report Thursday, but officials said they needed more time, the BBC said.

The investigation stemmed from an intelligence report that said Paksas' main supporter, Russian Yuri Borisov, was involved in illegal arms deals with Sudan.

The report also alleged some of Paksas' aides had links with crime rings and said Lithuania was a base for financing international terrorism.

There have been reports in the media that the committee's findings will prompt impeachment proceedings against Paksas, the BBC said.

Paksas, however, has denied any involvement in the scandal and has repeatedly refused to quit.
