Malvo's history detailed in sniper trial

CHESAPEAKE, Va., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- An Army buddy of convicted Washington-area sniper John Allen Muhammad testified Tuesday during the trial of Muhammad's alleged accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo.

The Washington Post said Robert Holmes detailed how Muhammad and Malvo would practice target shooting with a Bushmaster rifle in Tacoma, Wash.

Holmes said he first met Malvo in the spring of 2002 and that Muhammad and Malvo would sometimes stay with him for periods ranging from a few days to two weeks.

Malvo's attorneys claim the 18-year-old was brainwashed by the 42-year-old Muhammad, who was sentenced to death Monday for the sniper slaying of Dean Meyers.

Malvo has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to capital murder charges in the slaying of Linda Franklin, one of the Washington-area 2002 sniper fatalities.

Earlier Tuesday, a school principal from the Caribbean island of Antigua described how Muhammad showed up at the Seventh Day Adventist school one day in the fall of 1999, identifying himself as Malvo's uncle.

Malvo's trial is being held in Chesapeake on a change of venue from Fairfax, Va. Muhammad's trial was held in Virginia Beach, Va., also on a change of venue motion.
