Gephardt takes 1st place in Iowa poll

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- A new poll of Democrats likely to vote in next year's Iowa presidential caucus shows Rep. Dick Gephardt now leads the pack.

The latest Iowa Poll shows Gephardt as the first choice for 27 percent of Iowans who say they will definitely or probably attend the Democrat's Jan. 19 precinct caucuses, the Des Moines Register reports.

In second place is former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who has the support of 20 percent of the 501 registered Democrats, Green Party or no party members contacted at random by the poll.

The data shows that Gephardt has gained six points since The Iowa Poll taken in late July while Dean, who is generally considered to be the Democrat's national front-runner, has slipped three points. Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry is in third place with 15 percent.

The survey has a 4.4 percent margin of error.
