Arab League warns Israel over Arafat

CAIRO, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The Arab League warned of "inconceivable" consequences if Israel expels Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat from the Palestinian territories.

Speaking at the end of an emergency meeting of permanent delegates of the 22-member league Tuesday, Secretary-General Amr Musa said: "If Israel carried out its threat to evict Arafat, let no one talk about peace or the halt of violence."

He warned that such a move "would open the door for all possible and imaginable operations and counter-operations and hostile policies."

The Arab delegates issued a joint statement rejecting the Israeli decision to expel Arafat stressing that "this posed a serious threat to any hope, even if its dim, to continue the peace process."

Arab foreign ministers are expected to agree on a common stance in that regard at a meeting they will hold on Sept. 25 in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, which start next week.
