Sharon, Abbas to meet Sunday

TEL AVIV, Israel, July 18 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will meet his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday.

The meeting would signal the start of a busy week of diplomatic activity, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told the New York Times in Tel Aviv.

Both the Israeli and Palestinian prime ministers will meet with U.S. President George Bush in Washington

within the next 10 days -- Abbas on July 25 and Sharon four days later. Abbas will also travel to Egypt, Jordan and the Persian Gulf states ahead of his meeting in Washington.

Shalom, who is to address the foreign ministers of the European Union Monday before heading to Washington for his own meetings with Vice President Dick Cheney and others.

In Washington, Sharon will participate in a meeting and working lunch with Bush.

Abbas is set to meet and have lunch with Bush on July 25, in the first discussions the two have had in Washington.
