Tsvangirai hearing delayed

HARARE, Zimbabwe, June 7 (UPI) -- A Zimbabwe court will hear opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai's case on Monday, a delay of two days.

The court did not have equipment to record the proceedings, a measure requested by the defense, and was unable to proceed on Saturday as originally scheduled.

Tsvangirai was arrested Friday for the second time in five days after a week of anti-government protests. He heads the Movement for Democratic Change, which organized the demonstrations.

The MDC leader now faces two treason charges. The first one is over an alleged plot to assassinate Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.

In response to the protests, Mugabe said, "We were expected to quake and shake with fear at this threat from this pathetic puppet who regards the British as his masters and god."

The president also warned businesses and schools that went on strike they will be held responsible for their actions.

The British Broadcasting Corp. reported European and African countries are calling for talks, but they seem unlikely to succeed.
