Serena Williams responds to John McEnroe comments on social media

Serena Williams took to social media on Monday to respond to John McEnroe after the latter said that if she played on the men's circuit, she'd be "like No. 700 in the world."

"Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based," the 35-year-old Williams wrote on Twitter.

"I've never played anyone ranked 'there' nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir."

Her response came one day after McEnroe told NPR that Williams has earned the designation as the greatest woman to play tennis, but wasn't as accepting to classify her as the greatest to ever play the sport.

"That doesn't mean I don't think Serena is an incredible player. I do, but the reality of what would happen on a given day is Serena could beat some players, I believe, because she is so incredibly strong mentally," McEnroe said.

"But if she had to just play the circuit -- the men's circuit -- that would be an entirely different story."

Williams holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles of any player in the Open Era. She clinched her 23rd title at January's Australian Open and it was her last tournament before taking maternity leave in April.
