Serena Williams continues quest at Australian Open

No. 2 seed Serena Williams continued her quest for her 23rd Grand Slam trophy, easily dismissing fellow American Nicole Gibbs 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday.

Williams, who has yet to drop a set in Melbourne, needed just over an hour to defeat Gibbs and the six-time Australian Open winner moves on to play No. 16 Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic after she beat France's Caroline Garcia, the 21st seed, 6-2, 7-5.

Another American, unseeded Jennifer Brady, pulled off an upset, stunning No. 14 Elena Vesnina of Russia 7-6(4), 6-2. Likewise, No. 6 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia was stunned by 30th seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-3.

In other third-round action, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia took three sets to beat Greece's Maria Sakkari 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

More third-round matches were still to be played, including No. 17 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark facing Britain's Johanna Konta, ranked ninth.
