San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Tuesday after he was struck in the head by a pitch in Monday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park.

Posey was hit in the center of his batting helmet by a 94-mph fastball thrown by Diamondbacks starter Taijuan Walker. Posey was taken out of the game but he left under his own power and never lost consciousness.

He was placed on the disabled list because he experienced concussion symptoms.

Posey will be eligible to return when the Giants start a five-game road trip at Kansas City on April 18.

Posey, the 2012 National League MVP, is hitting .333 with one home run this season.

The Giants purchased the contract of veteran backup catcher Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Sacramento to take Posey's place on the roster. Nick Hundley replaced Posey in Monday's game and is expected to be the Giants' starting catcher in Posey's absence.

Right-handed pitcher Clayton Blackburn was designated for assignment to make room for Federowicz.
