In women's Rogers Cup play in Montreal, 15th-seeded Johanna Konta of Great Britain stayed hot, taking down American Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-2 in first-round action. Konta earned her first career singles title Sunday when she beat Venus Williams in the Bank of the West Classic final at Stanford, Calif.
Third-seeded American Varvara Lepchenko and fifth-seeded Simona Halep became the first two women to advance to the third round. Lepchenko beat British qualifier Naomi Broady 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Halep rolled past Australia's Daria Gavrilova 6-2, 6-3.
Tenth-seeded American Madison Keys rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Russia's Elena Vesnina in first-round action. Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova, seeded 14th, was a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 winner over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko. Sixteenth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia defeated Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
