The Indianapolis Colts claimed quarterback Charlie Whitehurst off waivers from the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Thursday.

Whitehurst was waived by the Titans on Wednesday and Indianapolis was in need of another quarterback due to Andrew Luck's kidney and abdominal injuries.

Veteran Matt Hasselbeck will start in Luck's absence but the Colts jumped at the opportunity to add an experienced quarterback like Whitehurst.

The 33-year-old Whitehurst has played 20 career NFL games (nine starts) since joining the NFL in 2006 and has passed for 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Last season, he played in seven games (five starts) for Tennessee and passed for 1,326 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions.

He has also played for the San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks.
