NHL: Pittsburgh 5, Carolina 2

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Jussi Jokinen notched a hat trick and provided the go-ahead goal in the third period of unbeaten Pittsburgh's 5-2 victory over Carolina Tuesday.

Jokinen netted the game's first goal in the opening period, but the Hurricanes fought back to forge a 2-2 deadlock on Nathan Gerbe's tally 3:13 into the third.

The Pens, however, finished the contest with three straight goals, ignited when Jokinen took a pass from Evgeni Malkin in the left circle and sent a wrist shot into the net less than 2 minutes after Gerbe's tally.

Tanner Glass later made it 4-2 and Jokinen finished his hat trick with a power-play marker as Pittsburgh improved to 3-0-0 starting the season.

Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 32-of-34 shots to notch the victory.

Eric Staal found the net and Cam Ward made 32 stops for the Hurricanes, who absorbed their first regulation loss of the year.
