MLB: Oakland 6, Detroit 3 (6 innings)

DETROIT, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Brandon Moss pounded a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth Tuesday and the Oakland Athletics bested Detroit 6-3 in rain-shortened, six-inning game.

With the score tied 3-3 and one out in the fifth, Josh Donaldson reached on an error by Tigers second baseman Omar Infante and was erased at second on Jed Lowrie's fielder's choice grounder.

That brought up Moss, who sliced an 0-1 pitch from Justin Verlander over the left-center field fence amid a heavy rain for a decisive two-run blast.

Seth Smith added a solo shot and Lowrie drove in a pair of runs for Oakland, which opened up a three-game lead over Cleveland for an American League wild card spot and grabbed a second win in two games against the Tigers.

Tommy Milone (10-9) needed to pitch only five innings to get the victory, yielding three runs (two earned) on three hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Verlander (12-10) had a rough outing, surrendering five runs (three earned) on four hits over five innings.
