BOSTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Daniel Nava singled in the sixth run of the ninth inning Thursday to finish off an improbable comeback that gave Boston an 8-7 win over Seattle.
The Red Sox trailed by seven runs heading into the eighth and still pulled out their third victory in a row. Boston scored a lone run in the eighth, after which Nava began and ended the Boston ninth. Seattle was able to record only one out in the final inning.
Nava drew a walk off Tom Wilhelmsen as the leadoff hitter, went to second on a single by Ryan Lavarnway and scored the inning's first run on Brock Holt's double. Another walk and two more singles accounted for three more runs and after David Ortiz struck out, Jonny Gomes singled in another run to create a 7-7 tie.
Stephen Drew became the third batter in the inning to reach on a walk, bringing up Nava. He singled on the first pitch he saw from Yoervis Medina, the third Seattle pitcher of the frame, to drive home Dustin Pedroia with the winning run.
The startling comeback made a winner out of Stephen Wright (2-0), who worked the final three innings after starter Ryan Dempster had allowed seven runs on nine hits.
Oliver Perez (2-3), the second of the three ninth-inning pitchers for the Mariners, was charged with the loss.
