NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., March 15 (UPI) -- David Frost highlighted a day of low scoring by firing an 8-under-par 63 Friday that put him one shot in front after one round of the Toshiba Classic.

Frost is coming off a fifth-place finish in his most recent start on the Champions Tour and he continued his solid play with a bogey-free round at the Newport Beach Country Club.

Fred Couples was alone in second following a 64 and Jim Gallagher posted a 66 to stand in third place.

Those tied for fourth at 67 included D.A. Weibring, Bernhard Langer, Barry Lane and Chien Soon Lu.

The 60-year-old course has narrow fairways lined with pines, but at only 6,591 yards is vulnerable to the modern professional golfer. There were 35 sub-par scores shot in the opening round.
