Federer defeats Fish to reach semifinals

CINCINNATI, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Roger Federer fought off Mardy Fish Friday to reach the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open.

Federer won for the eighth time in nine career meetings between the two, downing Fish 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). That set up a meeting with Stanislas Wawrinka in Saturday's semifinals.

Wawrinka advanced by defeating Milos Raonic 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

The other semifinal will be a rematch of the bronze medal match at the London Olympics. Juan Martin del Potro will take on Novak Djokovic after defeating Djokovic for third place in London.

Del Potro eliminated Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-4 one day after Chardy had defeated Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray.

Djokovic was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Marin Cilic.
