SAN DIEGO, May 2 (UPI) -- Jeff Suppan picked up the victory in his first major league appearance in two seasons Wednesday, helping San Diego shut out Milwaukee 5-0.
Suppan, 37, last pitched in the majors on Oct. 3, 2010, while with St. Louis. He signed a minor league contract with the Padres during the off-season, but failed to win a spot on their roster during spring training.
He was called up from Class AAA Tucson Wednesday and worked five innings while giving up four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Three relievers combined to complete the shutout, holding the Brewers to two hits over the final four innings.
Suppan is playing for his eighth team in 17 major league seasons.
Mark Kotsay doubled home San Diego's first score in a three-run third and then came in along with Chase Headley later in the inning on a base hit by Cameron Maybin. Jesus Guzman added a two-run double in the eighth.
The loss went to Yovani Gallardo (1-3), who surrendered three runs on seven hits over six innings.
