NHL: Washington 5, Anaheim 4 (OT)

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Niklas Backstrom scored late in regulation and again 2:18 into overtime Tuesday, lifting the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 victory over Anaheim.

The Capitals were down 4-2 midway through the final period when Troy Brouwer began a comeback with a long wrist shot that deflected off Jonas Hiller's glove, then bounced into the net behind the Anaheim goalie.

Then with 42 seconds left in regulation, Backstrom roofed the rebound of a Jason Chimera shot past Hiller for the equalizer. The Washington center provided the game-winner in overtime when he batted in a rolling puck at the top of the crease.

Tomas Vokoun needed to make only 11 saves to earn the win for the Southeast Division-leading Caps, who broke a two-game losing streak.

Teemu Selanne collected two goals and two assists, and Hiller finished with 35 saves as Anaheim lost for the sixth time in seven contests.
