NHL: Philadelphia 2, Boston 1

BOSTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek scored during the last minute of the first period Thursday, bringing Philadelphia a 2-1 victory over reigning NHL champ Boston.

The Flyers spoiled opening night for the Bruins, who in ceremonies prior to the game raised their first Stanley Cup championship banner in 39 years. Boston swept Vancouver in four games in June to win the title.

Boston got off to a good start when Brad Marchand scored on the power play 9:42 into the contest, but Ilya Bryzgalov shut down the Bruins the rest of the way while making 22 saves. Bryzgalov was starting his first game for Philadelphia after playing four years with Anaheim and four more with Phoenix.

Giroux produced the tying goal on the power play with 50 seconds left in the opening period and Voracek scored on a slapshot with a 3 seconds remaining before the first intermission.

Giroux was assisted on his goal by Jaromir Jagr, who played in his first NHL game in four seasons.

Jagr, 39, has led the NHL in goal scoring five times. He has spent the last three seasons playing in Russia.

Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots to take the loss. Thomas was named the league's outstanding goaltender last season and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs.
