Berrer advances to face Murray in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Michael Berrer took a close first-round decision Tuesday at the PTT Thailand Open tennis tournament.

Berrer pounded out seven aces in getting past Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in a match that took more than 1 1/2 hours. Chiudinelli had eight break-point changes but was only able to convert one. Berrer won both break opportunities he had.

That advanced Berrer into a second-round match with world No. 4 Andy Murray, who was given a first-round bye.

Lu Yen-hsun also won his way into a battle with a high seed, beating Joao Souza 6-2, 7-5 by winning three-quarters of the points on serve and losing a total of 15 points over 10 service games.

Lu next goes against third-seeded Gilles Simon.

Qualifier Simone Bolelli defeated Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) while Matthias Bachinger was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Greg Jones and Jarkko Nieminen topped Dominic Thiem 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. Donald Young advanced out of the day's final match when he built a 7-6 (8-6), 2-1 lead before Igor Andreev retired.
