Nadal, Roddick into round of 16 at Open

NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Defending champion Rafael Nadal and American Andy Roddick each moved into the round of 16 with victories Sunday at the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Spaniard downed 2002 Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 7-5 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, taking advantage of 60 unforced errors by the Argentine.

Nadal, meanwhile, logged only 18 miscues.

He next faces Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, who advanced Sunday by besting Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, American Andy Roddick -- the 2003 U.S. Open champ -- advanced by besting Julien Benneteau of France 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

The victory put Roddick into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2008.

Spaniard David Ferrer, the No. 5 seed, awaits Roddick after moving on with a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory over 26th-seeded Florian Mayer of Germany.

In other action Sunday, 12th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon gutted out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over former U.S. Open champ Juan Martin Del Potro; and American wild card Donald Young bounced 24th-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 7-5, 6-4, 6-3.
