MLB: Tampa Bay 4, Kansas City 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- James Shields hurled a six-hit shutout and Evan Longoria drove in all four Tampa Bay runs Tuesday in the Rays' 4-0 whitewash of Kansas City.

Shields (11-9) allowed three walks and struck out eight while recording his second win in two starts, during which he has given up only one run over 16 1/3 innings.

The right-hander didn't allow a runner to reach third base and tossed 75 of his 117 pitches for strikes as the Rays won their second straight against the Royals in a four-game series.

Longoria stroked a two-run single in the first inning and added a two-run homer in the sixth for Tampa Bay.

Kansas City's Jeff Francis (4-12) was tagged with the loss, yielding four runs on five hits over seven frames.
