
ST. LOUIS, July 8 (UPI) -- Joe Saunders and four relievers teamed to throw a three-hitter Thursday and Justin Upton had a two-run homer to give Arizona a 4-1 win over St. Louis.
The Cardinals lost their second in a row and fell back into a tie with Milwaukee for the lead in the National League Central.
Sanders (6-7) walked four, but gave up a lone hit five scoreless innings.
St. Louis produced its only run in the sixth against Micah Owings. Alberto Castillo, Yhency Brazoban and David Hernandez combined to allow only a walk over the final three innings.
Hernandez earned his sixth save.
Upton's homer gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead in the sixth. Sean Burroughs had a sacrifice fly in the second and Ryan Roberts singled in a run in the seventh.
Kyle McClellan (6-6) surrendered three runs on six hits in seven innings to take the loss.
