Isner now goes on to face fifth-seeded fellow American Alex Bogomolov Jr., who rallied to down Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Also Wednesday, second-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov fell in an upset to 18-year-old American wild card Denis Kudla, 6-1, 6-4, and No. 6 Olivier Rochus of Belgium -- last year's Newport runner-up -- bested Nicolas Mahut of France 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

No. 8 Tobias Kamke of Germany had little trouble with American Donald Young 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 elsewhere at Newport.
