The United States' Bogomolov, a Russian native, rallied from a set down to defeat German Mischa Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Also Monday, sixth-seeded Olivier Rochus or Belgium outlasted Australia's Greg Jones 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Rochus was last year's Newport runner-up, falling to American Mardy Fish in the finals. Fish isn't at Newport to defend his title, however, opting instead to play for the United States in this week's Davis Cup action.

American Donald Young dispatched Chile's Paul Capdeville 6-2, 6-1, in another opening round matchup.
