Isner now advances to face Frenchman Arnaud Clement.

The news wasn't so good, however, for fourth-seeded American Ryan Sweeting. He was on the short end of 6-4, 6-2 decision to Australian Matthew Ebden.

Two other seeded players also were bounced -- No. 3 Igor Kunitsyn of Russia fell to qualifier Jimmy Wang of Taipei 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, while No. 7 Michael Berrer was bested by former Top 5 star Tommy Haas 7-6 (11-9), 6-4.

Also Tuesday, eighth-seeded German Tobias Kamke got by British qualifier Alex Bogdanovic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, and Nicolas Mahut advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Argentine Sebastian Decoud.

Mahut will next face Belgium's Olivier Rochus, last year's Newport runner-up.
