DETROIT, May 29 (UPI) -- Justin Verlander threw 7 2/3 shutout innings Sunday and Detroit blanked the Boston Red Sox 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader.
Verlander (5-3) threw a career-high 132 pitches, scattering four hits, walking two and striking out three to pick up the win and salvage one victory for the Tigers in a three-game series against the Red Sox.
Jose Valverde tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, collecting his 12th save as Detroit won the makeup game for Saturday's rained-out contest.
Brennan Boesch and Miguel Cabrera each delivered RBIs in the first inning and the Tigers added a run in the eighth on Don Kelly's single.
Josh Beckett (4-2) pitched well in defeat, yielding only the first-inning runs on five hits. The Bosox ace was wild, however, walking five to go with five strikeouts.
