NHL: Toronto 5, Ottawa 1

OTTAWA, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Tyler Bozak notched a pair of first-period goals Saturday and the Toronto Maple Leafs cruised to a 5-1 victory over Ottawa.

After Clarke MacArthur put the Leafs up 1-0 less than 2 minutes into the contest, Bozak scored on the back end of a 3-on-1 Toronto rush that started with a turnover at center ice.

Bozak made it 3-0 Toronto only 3 minutes later after Phil Kessel stripped the puck from an Ottawa defender deep in the offensive zone and got it to Joey Crabb, who spotted Bozak for a one-timer past Brian Elliott.

Darryl Boyce and Luke Schenn also scored for Toronto. James Reimer turned aside 32 shots to earn a victory in his first NHL start.

Crabb, Tomas Kaberle and Kessel each recorded two assists.

Sergei Gonchar got the only goal for the Senators, losers of three straight.

Elliott was pulled late in the first period for Mike Brodeur, who let in two goals on 14 shots.
