NHL: Carolina 4, Ottawa 0

OTTAWA, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Cam Ward picked up his second shutout of the season Wednesday by making 37 saves in the Carolina Hurricanes' 4-0 victory over Ottawa.

It was the 14th shutout of Ward's 6-year career, all of it spent with the Hurricanes. His best shutout season came during the 2008-09 campaign, when he had six.

Zach Boychuk scored his first two goals of the season in his sixth appearance of the campaign for Carolina. He was called up from the American Hockey League this month to replace Jiri Tlusty, who has been out with an upper-body injury.

Boychuk had 32 goals when he was brought up, second best in the AHL.

The goals were the fourth and fifth of Boychuk's career, which has spanned brief stretches of three seasons with the Hurricanes. He scored twice in the first period and Carolina also got goals from Erik Cole in the middle period and Patrick Dwyer in the third.

Brian Elliott made 27 saves for the Senators, who had won their previous two games.
