Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice, getting the Devils on the board 5:30 into the game and then producing a power-play goal early in the third period. Rookie defenseman Mark Fayne produced his first NHL point with a goal late in the opening stanza. The goal came in his ninth game with the Devils.

The shutout was Brodeur's third of the season. He had nine last year, three short of his single-season high. Brodeur is in his 18th NHL season, all of them spent with the Devils.

Ilya Bryzgalov gave up three goals on 29 shots for the Coyotes, who opened a six-game road trip and lost for the fifth time in eight outings.
