Kane, who scored the winning goal in overtime to clinch the Stanley Cup title for the Blackhawks last season, followed Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp in the shootout and each of them scored.

Marty Turco stopped Mikael Samuelsson in the shootout after the first two Canucks had made their successful attempts.

The teams combined to take 69 shots in regulation and overtime. The only two to find the net came from Chicago's Viktor Stalberg with 38 seconds left in the first period and Vancouver's Daniel Sedin 60 seconds into the third. Sedin's goal came on the power play and was his seventh of the season.

Turco was credited with 36 saves and Roberto Luongo stopped 31 shots.

Chicago became the first team in the NHL this year to win five games.
